In January 1942, a crossword competition was held in The Daily Mail newsroom and then featured in the paper the following day. Unknown to those involved, however, the War Office was observing. They went on to covertly invite a select few of the crossword solvers to join its task force and help break the complex codes of German military’s Enigma machine.
