To find the best cryptologists for its wartime secret mission, the British government looked to crossword fans…

On 13th January 1942, a crossword competition was run in the Daily Telegraph news room and then featured in the paper the following day.  The competition was to solve the crossword in under 12 minutes.  Unknown to those involved, however, the War Office was observing. They went on to covertly invite a select few of the crossword solvers to join its task force and help break the complex codes of the Enigma and Lorenz cyphers.
